Nearly 60% of men between the ages of 40 and 59 years have an enlarged prostate gland, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Symptoms of BPH typically reflect obstruction of the bladder outlet (progressive urinary frequency, urgency and night time awakening to empty the bladder, and hesitancy and intermittency with reduced force and caliber of urine). The condition if left untreated, will eventually obstruct the bladder outlet, resulting in the retention of urine in the blood (uraemia). Many doctors believe that surgery is the only solution to the problem, however BPH may respond to nutritional and herbal support. This is particularly important as the surgical procedure often results in complications. In addition, nutritional factors may offer significant protection against developing prostatic enlargement. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of saw palmetto in reducing symptoms associated with BPH. Saw palmetto appears to have efficacy similar to that of medications like finasteride, but it is better tolerated and less expensive. There are no known drug interactions with saw palmetto, and reported side effects are minor and rare. Further studies have found that saw palmetto extract is as effective as finasteride (Proscar®) (with fewer side effects) in the treatment of BPH. Saw palmetto provides concentrated amounts of free fatty acids and sterols. Many studies concluded that it reduces the amount of DHT binding in the part of the prostate surrounding the urethra (the tube carrying urine from the bladder), Saw Palmetto also inhibits the actions of growth factors and inflammatory substances that may contribute to BPH. (DHT is a very potent androgen derived from testosterone, and is responsible for the overproduction of prostate cells which result in prostatic enlargement). Many people suffer from a variety of joints, back & hip pain, muscular soreness and arthritis. Reasons for theses conditions are many to include, age, sports / injury, over weight or hereditary etc. Joints / Arthritis If the joints are damaged this causes grinding, loss of fluid and acute pains.
